Right to Truth

With Pride Month at a close, there is no more fitting subject to highlight than the removal of a large Pride flag from the Stonewall monument in Manhattan, at the order of the Trump Administration. In accordance with rhetoric passed by President Trump, the National Park Service took down the flag as part of a larger war on forced diversity initiatives and “divisive narratives” (The White House). In the wake of the removal, the State Department had issued a statement saying that flagpoles on government property, “are not intended to serve as a forum for free expression by the public.” Meaning, according to the Department overseeing the National Park Service, the removal of the flag was not blatant homophobia, but rather pulling back on the display of “non-agency flags” at the monument.

It is no secret the important Stonewall has to the LGBTQ+ community. The monument was once a running establishment, a covert gay bar in the 1960s that was suddenly raided by police, causing a series of riots that shook New York City, and the nation as a whole. From the Stonewall Riots came a new age of LGBTQ+ rights campaigning, and essentially the modern Pride movement was born. Finally, in 2016, the place was made an official National Monument to honor the history and power of Pride for the whole of the American public to see (History).

Despite the actions taken by an Administration that has long been unfriendly to the LGBTQ+ community, New York spoke out instantly. A rally was held very soon after the removal, protesting the Trump Administration’s censorship, while key figures like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani spoke out, calling on the city to honor the legacy and history of its Gay community. Thankfully, the massive Pride flag now again flies powerfully above the Stonewall National Monument in New York, having been reinstated by the city following the immense outcry. Still, with recent court rulings, the Federal Government may still act once more to stifle what they see as hostile ideologies.

Author’s Opinion: Though some time has passed since this censorship occurred, I believe it is important to highlight it now that Pride Month has passed. Too often I have seen individuals online complaining about how “deviant” sexualities are celebrated and given so much attention, especially during Pride, so as we move past it, I believe it must be remembered that the LGBTQ+ community is a minority, and a vulnerable one at that, which the American public as a whole must stand in solidarity with. The actions taken by the Trump Administration to rip down the Pride flag and erase the culture of the homosexual community is repulsive, and such blatant corruption and tyranny will not stand under the American system of government. I thank you for your time and urge you to remember that support for Pride should not only be in June, but a constant year-round.
